Motivation

Effective communication in healthcare is crucial for accurate diagnosis, treatment, and patient satisfaction. However, many patients who are deaf or hard of hearing face barriers in accessing quality healthcare due to communication challenges. To create a more inclusive healthcare environment, MediSign was founded to empower both healthcare professionals and patients with the tools and knowledge to bridge these gaps.

Statistics

466 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss, with 34 million of these being children (World Health Organization). Many of these people face interpreter-related barriers to healthcare services:

• Without interpreters, deaf patients often face misunderstandings and inadequate communication, leading to misdiagnoses and incorrect treatments (Health Law & Policy).
• A shortage of in-person medical interpreters forces hospitals to rely on inadequate machine translation tools, resulting in poor communication (The Hastings Center).
